Screaming Frog and Semrush get compared constantly and are barely the same kind of product. Screaming Frog is a desktop crawler that does one thing — technical site audits — to a depth nothing else matches, for $279 a year. Semrush is a cloud marketing suite that does forty things, one of which is a site audit, for $139 to $549 a month. The question people are really asking when they search this is: do I need both, and if I can only afford one, which?

Short answer: if your job is technical SEO, Screaming Frog; if your job is SEO generally, Semrush; if you are an agency, probably both, with one Screaming Frog licence for the person who runs deep crawls. And if the only Semrush report you open is Site Audit, there is a third option that costs less than either of them for that job. This guide works through each of those in turn. We make the third option and say so.

What Screaming Frog does that Semrush cannot

Screaming Frog's whole product is the crawl, and it shows. You control everything: crawl speed, include and exclude patterns, user-agent, whether to follow nofollow, whether to render JavaScript in headless Chromium, which URL list to crawl in list mode. Custom extraction pulls any element from every page with XPath, CSS selectors or regex — prices, schema fields, author names, stock status — which turns a crawler into a site-wide data collection tool. Crawl comparison diffs two crawls, which is the entire workflow for a migration. API integrations join GA4, Search Console, PageSpeed Insights, and Ahrefs or Moz data onto every URL in one export. The free version does all the core checks on 500 URLs; the $279 licence unlocks the rest.

Semrush's Site Audit does none of that. It runs a scheduled cloud crawl with a fixed set of checks, scores the site, and buckets issues into errors, warnings and notices. That is a genuinely useful thing, and for many teams it is enough — but if you have ever needed to crawl a client's staging site behind basic auth with a custom user-agent and extract the product SKU from every page, you know which tool you reached for.

What Semrush does that Screaming Frog cannot

Everything that is not crawling. Keyword Magic Tool and Keyword Overview are the reason most people buy Semrush: a very large keyword database with volume, difficulty, intent and SERP features. Position Tracking checks rankings daily with local and mobile variants. Backlink Analytics and Backlink Gap run on Semrush's own index. Domain Overview and Organic Research show what competitors rank for. Then the marketing layer: Advertising Research, Social Toolkit, Content Marketing Platform, and in the Starter tier and up, AI-search visibility tracking.

Screaming Frog has no keyword database, no backlink index, no rank tracker and no competitor data. It can pull some of that in through APIs if you also pay for Ahrefs or Moz, but it is a consumer of that data, not a source. If your week involves keyword research, Screaming Frog is not in the running.

Site audit head-to-head: the only overlap

This is the one place the tools compete directly, so it is worth being specific.

  • Depth and control: Screaming Frog, clearly. It finds more, on more configurable terms, and lets you look at the raw data any way you like.
  • Convenience: Semrush. Set it once, it crawls weekly, emails you the delta, and shows the health score trend in a dashboard anyone on the account can open. Nothing to install and no laptop tied up.
  • Scale: Semrush for large sites on a normal machine, since the crawl runs in its cloud within your plan's page limits; Screaming Frog for very large sites if you have the RAM and use database storage mode, with no plan limits at all.
  • JavaScript: both render it; Screaming Frog only in the paid version.
  • What you get at the end: a list, in both cases. Screaming Frog gives you everything unranked; Semrush gives you everything in three severity buckets with a score. Neither tells you which five issues to fix this sprint given what the site actually earns traffic from. That gap is the reason the third column exists in the table above.

The pricing math

Screaming Frog is $279 per user per year — about $23 a month — with a free tier that does not expire. Semrush's SEO plan is $139 a month, or $117 on annual billing, so $1,408 to $1,668 a year for one user, and each extra user is $45 or more a month. The Starter plan with AI-search features is $199. Semrush costs five to six times as much as Screaming Frog for one seat, and the gap widens with every teammate.

That is not an unfair comparison so much as a category difference. Semrush's price buys the keyword and backlink databases, which cost real money to maintain. If you use them, the price is defensible. If you bought Semrush and mostly run Site Audit — which describes a surprising share of the "is Semrush worth it?" Reddit posts — you are paying $1,400 a year for a crawler, and our Semrush alternatives guide is the next thing to read.

Which should you choose?

Choose Screaming Frog if…

  • Technical SEO is your job or a large part of it
  • You do migrations, replatforms, or one-off deep audits
  • You need custom extraction, list mode, or full crawl control
  • You already get keyword and backlink data elsewhere, or do not need it
  • Budget matters and one licence covers the people who actually crawl

Choose Semrush if…

  • Keyword research, rank tracking and competitor analysis are your daily work
  • You want one login for the whole SEO and content workflow
  • You will use the PPC, social or content tools too
  • You want a scheduled audit with zero setup and can live with less depth

Use both if…

  • You are an agency: Semrush for the account team's research and reporting, one or two Screaming Frog licences for the technical SEOs
  • You run a large in-house programme where the suite is already budgeted and the crawler is a rounding error

"Both" is the most common answer among people who do this for a living, and it is not tool sprawl — it is two tools each used for what it is best at, at a combined cost dominated by the one you would have bought anyway.

The third option: if Site Audit is the only overlap you care about

A specific reader ends up on this page: someone who does not need keyword research from Semrush but wants something more shareable and decisive than Screaming Frog's spreadsheets. Barracuda is built for that reader. It crawls up to 10,000 pages on Pro, scores every issue by impact and groups it by type, attaches AI recommendations with page-specific fixes, and shows the reasoning behind each priority. Connect Google Search Console and the audit is weighted by real impressions and clicks — the same missing canonical is ranked differently on a page earning traffic than on one that is not. Crawl history shows what changed between runs, an interactive link graph handles orphan pages, rank tracking is included, and public report links replace the emailed export. Extra users are $5 a month rather than $45. It is $29 a month, with a 100-page free tier.

What it does not do: keyword research or backlinks (that is Semrush's territory), and JavaScript rendering, custom extraction or list mode (that is Screaming Frog's). It replaces the recurring audit, not the deep one-off dig and not the research suite. The head-to-heads are here: Screaming Frog vs Barracuda and Semrush vs Barracuda. Frequently asked questions

Is Screaming Frog better than Semrush?

For technical site audits, yes — it is deeper, more configurable, and a fraction of the price. For keyword research, rank tracking, backlinks and competitor analysis, Screaming Frog does not compete at all; Semrush is the better tool because it is the only one of the two that does those things.

Can Semrush replace Screaming Frog?

For routine audits on a normal site, Semrush Site Audit covers most of what most people use Screaming Frog for, with less depth and no custom extraction, list mode or full crawl configuration. For migrations, large or unusual sites, and data extraction, it cannot. Many teams keep one Screaming Frog licence alongside Semrush for exactly those jobs.

Which is better for beginners?

Semrush, for the guided interface, health score and built-in explanations — though the free version of Screaming Frog is an excellent way to learn what a crawler actually sees, and costs nothing. Beginners who only need a site audit may find a prioritized tool such as Barracuda or Sitebulb easier than either.

Is Screaming Frog free? Is Semrush free?

Screaming Frog is free for up to 500 URLs with no expiry. Semrush has a 7-day trial and a free account limited to roughly ten lookups a day with one project — enough to evaluate, not to work.

The bottom line

Screaming Frog and Semrush are not alternatives; they are answers to different questions. Buy Screaming Frog when the question is "what is technically wrong with this site," buy Semrush when it is "what should this site rank for and who is beating it," and buy both when you are paid to answer both. If the only Semrush question you ask is the first one, you are paying suite prices for a crawler — and there are better crawlers for that money.
